To install AcuConnect on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server

1. Install and configure TCP/IP before installing AcuConnect.

2. Log in using the Administrator account or an account that belongs to the Administrators group.

3. If you have the AcuConnect service running from a previous installation of the product, you will need to stop this service and remove it before you run the setup utility.

4. Use the setup utility contained on the diskette or CD-ROM to install the AcuConnect files. To run setup:

On the task bar, select "Start", "Run" and then type "a:\setup".

or

From the command prompt, type "a:\setup".

Substitute the appropriate drive letter if your 3.5" diskette drive is not drive "a:" or if you are installing from CD-ROM.

Follow the instructions on the screen, entering your product code and product key when prompted.

5. If you have installed a previous version of AcuConnect on the server, you already have two files that are important to the AcuConnect process: "AcuAccess" and "server.cfg". If these files are in the \etc directory, the setup utility will detect them and ask you if you want to overwrite them. Do not overwrite them unless you have a backup copy.

If you have a copy of AcuServer installed on this server, you can use your AcuServer AcuAccess file to connect to AcuConnect, if desired. However, if you map any user to DEFAULT_USER in this file and DEFAULT_USER has a password, then you must include the password in the AcuAccess record. (See section 3.3.2 Access Records for more information.) If you do not want to modify your AcuAccess file, you can set up a separate access file for AcuConnect.

The "AcuAccess" file (delivered on the AcuConnect installation CD) contains one access record that gives all users access to AcuConnect if DEFAULT_USER is set. You can modify this file later, if desired. The file "server.cfg" contains the server configuration variables; when the file is first installed, these are all commented out. You can modify this file later if desired.

If you have the AcuConnect service running from a previous installation of the product, you will see a message that says "Read Only File Detected". If you receive this message, you need to select "Cancel/Exit Setup", stop the service and remove it, and run the setup utility again.

6. acuconnect must be installed and started as a Windows NT/2000 service. The setup program will create a sample Start Menu folder, if desired, and will ask if you want to install and start this service.

The Start Menu folder contains icons that can run the various programs needed for AcuConnect, along with icons to display the release notes and the AcuConnect configuration file.

The Start Menu folder is not required to run AcuConnect. You can safely remove it. All of the AcuConnect commands may be run from the Windows NT/2000 command prompt as described in Appendix A.

7. If you choose to start AcuConnect during the installation process, then the Windows NT/2000 command prompt displays showing the status of the Windows service being started or restarted automatically. You may see some error messages that can be ignored if the Windows service is not already installed and running. For example, you might see:

sc.exe stop Acuconnect
[SC] Open/Control Service failed
sc.exe delete Acuconnect
[SC] Open/Control Service failed
acuconnect.exe -install
AcuConnect service installed
acuconnect.exe -start
STATE: START PENDING

The Windows service that is needed for AcuConnect can also be started manually. Refer to section 5.2.2 Windows NT and Windows 2000 Startup for instructions. The runtime that is installed on the Windows NT or Windows 2000 server is called "acuthread."
