2.2 Acucorp Products, Security, and Firewalls

Security is a key consideration as you set up your client/server environment. By its very nature, in a client/server environment traffic is flowing in to and out from your network. The Internet is simply another example of this, only on a considerably larger scale.

Firewalls are one means of controlling access to and from your network. A firewall can enforce your organization's access control policy to and from its network, keeping unauthorized users out and enabling authorized users to communicate as policy dictates. You can impose this security at the application or network level. For additional information, consult any of the commercially available books on network security.

All Acucorp client/server applications communicate through a "port". If you are using a firewall, you will need to open ports through which the Acucorp client/server products can communicate. These can either be the default ports for the given product (see the table below) or each product can be set to communicate over a specified port by use of a startup parameter.

The following table lists the default port numbers for Acucorp products you will use in a client/server or Internet environment:

Acucorp Product Port Number
ACUCOBOL-GT Thin Client 5632
AcuConnect 6996
AcuLaunch 5632
AcuServer 6553

The products can be started on an alternate port with a command line option of a configuration variable, as shown in the table below. See the User's Guides for these products for additional information.

Acucorp Product Configuration Variable
ACUCOBOL-GT Thin Client ATC_PORT
AcuConnect SERVER_PORT
AcuLaunch ACURCL_PORT
AcuServer ACUSERVER_PORT

You will learn more about these products in the remaining chapters of this book.
