To configure a remote data source in Windows

1. Select Data Source Configuration Utility from the Start/Programs/Acucorp 5.2.0/AcuODBC/AcuODBC Server menu to open the AcuODBC Server Configuration dialog box.

2. Click Add to configure a new data source. This opens the AcuODBC Server Configuration property sheet.

3. Select the General tab. Complete the Data Source Name, XFD Directory, Data Directory, and Data File Extension fields as described in section 3.2, "Defining the Data Source". To ensure accuracy, Acucorp recommends that you use the browse buttons to specify directories and files. If you are not using the browse buttons, make sure that you accurately enter the names of any requested files and directories. The AcuODBC Server Configuration utility does not check to see if they exist. If you enter an incorrect name, you will not be able to bring the external data into your application.

Note: If AcuODBC server is running on a UNIX server and the XFD files reside on that server as well, the entire name of the XFD file must be lowercase, such as "accounts.xfd". In addition, the entries in the "xfdrmt.dir" file must also be lowercase. See section 3.2, "Defining the Data Source," for additional information.

4. Select one of the following from the drop-down box for the NT Security setting. The value of this setting determines the type of security used when allowing clients to connect to AcuODBC Server. The setting in this field must match the setting of the NT Security field on the AcuODBC Server tab of the client configuration. See section 9.2, "Configuring the Remote DSN on the Client" for additional details.

If ... Then ...
You want to use AcuODBC Server's security features Select None. AcuODBC Server uses the AcuAccess file to authorize the connection and manage file access.
You want to use Windows NT's security system by connecting to the server via a named pipe. This method does not require the use of a password. Select Named Pipe. The password field in the AcuAccess file is ignored. The AcuODBC client connects to the AcuODBC server using a named pipe. This gives the client all the features of Windows NT file permissions. The client machine must have permission to create the named pipe. If the client does not have permission, both the client and server systems will hang. See your Windows NT documentation for information about permissions and named pipes. Note that Acucorp does not encourage the use of named pipes.
You want to use Windows NT's security system by logging the user onto the Windows domain via a password. The password may be stored in the AcuAccess file or can be entered by the user directly. Select Logon. When "Logon" is selected, AcuODBC Server attempts to log the user onto the Windows NT domain using the password in the AcuAccess file. If there is no password or the password is not valid, the user is prompted to enter a password. "Logon" is frequently a simpler, more reliable connection method than a named pipe.

See section 8.4, "System Security - The AcuAccess File" for information on AcuODBC Server security.

5. Complete the remaining tabs on the AcuODBC Server Configuration property sheet.

6. Click OK when you have finished configuring the data source.

7. Click OK again to close the AcuODBC Server Configuration dialog box.

Note: The AcuODBC Server tab does not appear when you configure a source through the AcuODBC Server Data Source Configuration utility. Because you are configuring the source on the server, the information on that tab is already available to the system.
